Here are some notes from Young Adult at Crossroads’ Haverim Devotions-style study through John 18:1-11. I’m sharing my own Inspired level “d’rash” so, be kind. I highly recommend the book Haverim by Paul Gibbs, and this Liveware video series featuring Paul, for those interested in this study process. It’s an amazing thing to study God’s word with friends and get all of the insights from all the peoples!

Jesus was in control of His arrest.
Jesus took ownership of the duties God gave him.
Jesus willingly accepted His fate.
Jesus betrayed, not surprised.
When others fight, Jesus surrenders (His will to the Father’s)
Jesus embarrasses world’s best trained troops.
Jesus asserts, “I am.”

Life comes from death.
Jesus pursues God’s purposes
Pressure cookers make good things!
Anointing, light, and bread come from crushing
Jesus; the light that can’t be put out
Olive oil; THE essential oil.
Putting out the light leaves only darkness.

From the perspective of a Roman Soldier
Why does it take this many of us to go out, in the middle of the night, to arrest some Jew? How much trouble can he cause? Aren’t there more important things for us to be doing with so many people in town for this so-called holiday? We are walking in the moonlight with torches. He’s totally going to see us coming. He probably won’t even be there when we get there.
Ok, so he’s here, and it looks like that guy is hiding a sword. This could go bad. WHAT JUST HAPPENED? Why did I fall on my butt with everyone else? I’m glad it wasn’t just me. I wish I spoke Hebrew because I don’t know what they’re saying, but that was crazy. I wonder if this is the guy I heard some centurions talking about. Now I’m kind of curious wha’t going to happen with him.
And what just happened with the guy and the ear? I’m so confused! Just do you job, soldier, just do your job.

This was an amazing study together. We all really enjoyed discovering all of the connections throughout scripture. Jesus arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane is, if you’ll pardon the pun, ripe for the harvest for pictures of how God can and wants to speak to you and how you how He wants to cultivate your life for His kingdom.
