While flipping channels this morning I came across President-Elect Obama announcing his choice of Hillary Clinton for Sec. of State. He described her as sharing his core values and the core values of the American people.
What are these core values? To me, core values are something that someone has sat down, thought through, and settled on for themselves. Certainly many people can have many of them in common, that really isn’t my point. The thing that struck me about this passing statement is that Mr. Obama assumes all Americans have the same core values. It seems to me that when you watch the news that is far from the case.
Anyway, all of this to say that if I had the same core values as Mr. Obama, I would have voted for him. I just don’t care for the assumption and the false sense of unity that throwing around such a phrase generates. That’s my gripe and I’m sticking to it.
