So, yeah, this whole website thing. It’s been over a year since I’ve posted anything. Didn’t notice? Neither did I. And then I turned 40. It was weirder than I thought it would be. I don’t feel old, nor do I feel young. I feel, sort of, empowered. Not in the Tawanda Fried Green Tomatoes way either. (Yes, I’m a dude and I like that movie.) I feel like I’m old enough to have some actual authority. I still felt like a punk kid even in my 30s. Some people even treated me like a punk kid. Well, that stops soon!

The office of Pastor carries with it a fair amount of responsibility and authority. Sadly, there seems to have been an epidemic of pastors who have abused their authority in the name of responsibility. That’s nothing new to be sure, but it is scary and delicate in the information age. If a person feels slighted by a pastor there are those who are looking for stories like that and have the means to share it with the world, literally. This made me very trepedatious when it came to, you know, being in charge of other people in a spiritual context.

When you abuse your authority the result is lose your responsibility. That’s what I’ve been afraid of. When you don’t use your authority the result is that you aren’t being responsible. This is what I’ve been doing. Neither result is acceptable.

My friend, Pastor Kelley Taylor, told me some years ago and has continued to tell me, “You have something to say.” He doesn’t mean that I have thoughts and words that should be shared. He means that plus I deserve to be heard, and really I deserve to speak. Does that make sense? Many people speak when they shouldn’t. Others don’t when they should. Then there are those who should speak and they do. Kelley was saying that I belong in that last group even though I didn’t feel like it. Now that I’m 40 I kind of feel like it.

I have no idea if it has anything to do with the age thing. Maybe a switch just flipped. Whatever the case, I’m going to try and work with it. This website will be a part of it. Writing, videos of Bible studies, quirky sense of humor, productivity nerdery, it’s all coming at ya.

You have been warned.
