Why Does Life Suck for Some People?

The lives of some people suck. There is just no other way to put it. Jobs are lost, car is broken down, sickness, spouses leave, and that’s just Tuesday. Sometimes we ask what’s wrong with us. Sometimes we ask what’s wrong with God. Let me just say this; there is no direct, one-to-one relationship with the good or bad things we do and how good or “bad” God is toward us. Jesus said in Matthew 5:45, “[God] makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” Anyone who says otherwise is selling something (The Princess Bride).

The question then become, “Why?”

  • Why is my life this way while that person’s life is that way?
  • Am I doing something wrong and they are doing something right?
  • Am I bad and are they good?

First of all, no one is good. No human being in their nature is naturally good. We can do things that are considered good, but we are not by our nature good. See Romans 3:10-12. God does not do good things for good people because there are no good people. Get that right in your head because it will really mess you up otherwise.

Second of all, there are all kinds of example in scripture and history of some of the most Godly people having what we might call the most miserable of lives. Just look at the Apostle Paul’s life. Beaten numerous times, nearly stoned to death, in and out of prisons, shipwrecked, and all because he was following Jesus. By the way, notice how much the gospel spread through his miserable life.

I am convinced that instead of wallowing in trying to figure out the why question we should figure out the what question. What what question? This one; what are you going to do about it? Lemme ‘splain.

The way I see it we are dealing with two parties each making a decision. God had decided that right now this is the way things need to be in your life. Why because a less important question. It’s God’s decision and He knows best. Our decision is what are we going to do about it? What is our response to God’s decision going to be?

  • Are we going to blame Him or bless Him?
  • Are we going to gripe in it or grow through it?
  • Are we going to shut down or show up?

When you are at the bottom of the pit stop looking around and look up. When you are in the dark look for the light. When you come to the end of yourself you are at the beginning of Jesus, and there is no better place to be. Be diligent and practical. Keep looking for work, try to get the car fixed, pray for healing and miracles. But don’t equate the answers to those prayers to the amount of God’s love for you or His view of you. Recognize that God has made a choice. Now you need to make a choice that is independent of your circumstances be they good or bad. Consider these words from Paul as you make your choice.

“Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:11-13, NKJV
