Book Recommendation – Chuck Smith: A Memoir of Grace

Two books read in three weeks? Yes, it is some kind of record. And this book is not your typical CC history rehash book. You could say that this book goes B.C. – Before Chuck. Little joke there, very little. There is some great stuff in this book. There are 10 chapters. 1-8 are all about everything before CC. Chapter 9 is about the transition into and first few years of CC. Chapter 10 is a great series of nuggets of wisdom from Chuck gleaned from God’s word.

Science Almost Catches Up With Bible, Again – Three Families

The Washington Post has a very interesting article on a new report that suggests all humans are descended from three “families”. You can head over and read it, or hang here because I’m going to walk through most of it and show how some faulty thinking and bad assumptions lead to bad science and conclusions.

Book Recommendation – Ministry in the Image of God

As I may have said in the past, I don’t like to read. I’m a slow reader and easily distracted. So I try to read stuff that is good, stuff I can use. How do I find it? By asking others who are readers. In this case the recommendation comes from Sarah Yardley who runs the show over at Calvary Distribution. She did not disappoint. The book is called, Ministry in the Image of God – The Trinitarian Shape of Christian Service by Stephen Seamands. Had I known the denominational background of the author in advance I might not have even bothered. Sometimes our own prejudices, justified or not, get in the way of God trying to say something because He sure has something to say through this book. I imagine the Lord had the same problem with Peter. I guess I’m in good company!

Emotional Vibes in Spiritual Movements

This is more of one of those funny observations than anything else.

Coming from a primarily Calvary Chapel background and hearing about the history of the moment, I would have to characterize the vibe of things as gentle. After all, it was mostly a hippie generation. Peace, love, groovy, far out, right on. Just listening to Chuck Smith and his slow paced baritone voice mellowed you right out. The music reflected this. The people reflected this. The churches reflected this.

For the past year or so I’ve been listening to stuff from Acts 29. Now, this isn’t intended to be a slam of any kind on these guys or those involved, but I have to be honest about this. Everyone sounds angry.

Holy Ground – Lack of Shoes Required

While doing some reading I came upon the phrase “holy ground” and of course my ADD brain went several different directions at once. Aside from being a great name for a coffee shop (get it?) it’s an image from Exodus where Moses is summoned by the Lord to Mt. Sinai and He commissions Moses to go back and set His people free. God, in the form of a burning bush, tells Moses to remove his shoes because he is standing on holy ground. This got me thinking. Why would God want Moses to do that?
